Quick answer: Why should women over 40 start a side hustle or passion project? Because it gives you extra income, a financial safety net if your job changes, a creative outlet, new skills, and a way to build something that’s truly yours. Midlife is a great time to start: you often have more time as kids grow up, you have decades of wisdom, and you know what you want. Start small with a few hours a week, set clear goals, and grow from there.
Let’s be real. Midlife can feel like a roller coaster you didn’t quite sign up for. The kids are grown, the career ladder doesn’t look the same as it did at 25, and you’re wondering, “What else is out there for me?”
I’m Jax, a certified life coach for women over 40. I work full time in corporate finance, and on the side I’ve built this blog, my podcast, my coaching, and my work as an Amazon and LTK influencer. I’ve also used a second job to pay off debt. As of October 2026, I’ve paid off $45,000. So yes, I’m a big believer in the side hustle.
You have more time for you. When my son was growing up, my schedule revolved around him: baseball, school, and paying for college. Now he’s grown and living on his own. For the first time in years, my time is my own. If you’re an empty nester too, that time can be a gift.
You have wisdom on your side. You’ve been around the block. You know what you want, and maybe more importantly, what you don’t. The knowledge and experience you’ve built up is a huge advantage.
You’re tired of the grind. Many of us want more freedom, flexibility, and work that feels meaningful. A side hustle lets you test that without quitting your job.
You want to leave a legacy. I want to show my son that you can change your life at any age. Building something of your own is a powerful way to do that.
Think about what you already know and love. A few ideas:

No. Many women start side businesses in midlife because they have more time, experience, and clarity about what they want. Your skills and life experience are a big advantage.
Look at what you already know: coaching, consulting, freelancing, teaching an online course, content creation, affiliate marketing, or selling something you make. Start with something that fits your schedule and interests.
You can start with a few hours a week. Consistency matters more than big blocks of time, so schedule it like any other appointment.
Yes. When I took a second job, I put that extra money straight toward my debt. Even a few hundred dollars a month can make a real difference over time.
Midlife isn’t the end of the road. It’s the beginning of a new chapter. Whether you’re dreaming up your next big idea or dusting off an old passion, it’s your time.
