Quick answer: How do you make friends in midlife? Go where people are already open to meeting someone: local women’s groups, classes, clubs, and events. Start with a genuine compliment or easy small talk, then be the one who suggests coffee or a walk. Keep showing up, because friendships take time to build. And don’t forget your old friends: a weekly text and a standing plan can keep those bonds strong.
Making friends after 40 can feel like walking into a party where everyone already knows each other. Schedules fill up, circles shrink, and making friends feels like something we left behind with our high school yearbooks. But it’s absolutely possible, and it can be really fun.
I’m Jax, a certified life coach for women over 40. Rebuilding my social life has been one of the sweetest parts of my reinvention. Here’s what’s working for me.
Friendships fade for all kinds of reasons: career changes, kids, moves, caregiving, or simply growing in different directions. And in midlife, many of us hit an empty nest or a new chapter and realize we want people who fit the woman we are now.
It matters, too. The Harvard Study of Adult Development, one of the longest-running studies on happiness, has found that strong relationships are one of the biggest predictors of a happy, healthy life.
1. Lead with a compliment. This is my favorite icebreaker, and it works. “I love your earrings! Where did you get them?” Compliments are warm and easy, and the conversation usually flows from there. Next thing you know, you’re swapping Instagram handles and planning coffee. Just make sure it’s genuine.
2. Join a local women’s group. Here in Northeast Ohio, I joined a local ladies’ Facebook group that hosts events every month, like happy hours, brunches, walks, and book clubs. Everyone there wants to make friends, which takes the pressure off. Search for groups tied to your interests, from hiking to thrifting.
3. Get comfortable with small talk. Small talk is the appetizer before the main course. Have a few easy questions ready:
4. Be the one who makes the plan. Most people are relieved when someone else takes the first step. Suggest something low-pressure, like a quick coffee, a walk, or a local event.
5. Let yourself be a little awkward. Everyone feels it. Sharing a bit of your real self invites others to do the same, and that’s where real connection starts.
6. Be patient and keep showing up. Research by University of Kansas professor Jeffrey Hall found it takes roughly 50 hours together to go from acquaintance to casual friend, and around 200 hours to become close friends. Friendship is a marathon, not a sprint.
Old friends remind us who we were and cheer for who we’re becoming. Here’s how I keep those bonds alive with a busy schedule:
If you live far apart: try video calls, voice notes, and good old-fashioned cards or care packages.
If you’ve grown in different directions: look for new common ground, or try something new together.

It’s more common than people admit. Careers, kids, caregiving, and moves can all shrink your circle. The good news is that you can build new friendships at any age.
Try local women’s Facebook groups, Meetup events, fitness classes, book clubs, volunteer groups, church or community groups, and classes for hobbies you enjoy.
Research by Jeffrey Hall at the University of Kansas suggests it takes about 50 hours together to become casual friends and around 200 hours to become close friends.
Send a simple message, like “I was thinking about you. How have you been?” Then suggest a coffee, call, or event. Weekly texts and regular plans help the friendship stick.
Making friends in midlife is a chance to build a circle that fits who you are now. Start with a compliment, join a group, or text an old friend today. The world is full of wonderful people waiting to connect with you.
