Quick Answer: The single habit that’s changed my midlife the most is guarding my calendar for myself, every single week, no exceptions. That means blocking time for morning movement, a weekly self-care day, time with friends, and even quiet morning walks while on vacation. In midlife, time doesn’t just show up on its own anymore, you have to claim it, or everyone and everything else will happily take it from you.
Hey GlowGetter. Welcome to a brand-new series I’m calling How to Make Your Midlife the Best Chapter Yet. Over the next several posts, I’m going to walk you through the exact habits and mindset shifts that have turned my 40s into the strongest, most exciting chapter of my life so far, not despite everything I’ve been through, but because of how I’ve chosen to move through it.
We’re starting with the one habit I’d protect above almost everything else.
Guard your calendar.
It means treating your own time the same way you’d treat a meeting with your boss, a doctor’s appointment, or your kid’s school event back when you had to build your whole week around them. It goes on the calendar. It doesn’t get bumped. It doesn’t get “we’ll see.”
For most of my life, especially raising my son on my own, my calendar belonged to everyone but me. His schedule came first. Work came first. Whatever fire needed putting out that day came first. I was always somewhere on the list, usually near the bottom.
Somewhere in my 40s, I made a decision that changed everything: I put myself on the calendar first, every single week, before anything else got to claim that space.
Because midlife is the season where your time gets pulled in more directions than almost any other stage of life.
You might be caring for aging parents. You might still have kids at home, or you might be watching them leave the nest for the first time. You’re probably deep into a career, maybe even leveling up in it. Your body is changing. Your hormones are shifting. Your friendships need more intention to maintain than they did in your twenties, when everyone lived down the hall from each other.
If you don’t guard your time on purpose, midlife will happily fill every single hour of your week with everyone else’s needs and none of your own. It won’t ask permission first. It’ll just happen, slowly, until you look up one day and realize you can’t remember the last time you did something just for you.
That’s exactly why this is tip number one in this whole series. Everything else, your health, your mindset, your goals, your relationships, gets built on top of this. If your calendar doesn’t protect space for you, none of the rest of it has anywhere to live.
I want to get specific here, because “make time for yourself” is easy to say and a lot harder to actually do. Here’s what it looks like in my real week.
Every morning, before the rest of the day gets its hands on me, I move my body. A walk. Weights. Stretching. Some mornings it’s all three, some mornings it’s just a walk around the block. It doesn’t have to be complicated to count.
This time is non-negotiable for me, and here’s why: it’s the one part of my day where nobody needs anything from me. Nobody’s asking me a question. Nobody’s waiting on an email. It’s just me, moving, breathing, and starting my day from a place of strength instead of scrambling.
Sundays are sacred in my world, and I protect them fiercely. This is my full reset day, what I call my everything day.
I’m talking the full everything shower. Dermaplaning. Self-tanning. Meal prepping for the week ahead, so future-me isn’t scrambling on a Tuesday night trying to figure out dinner. I read. I sit down and work on content creation for the week, which, if I’m honest, doesn’t even feel like work most Sundays, it feels like part of my reset.
By the time Sunday evening rolls around, I don’t just feel prepared for the week. I feel like myself. That matters more than people give it credit for.
This one is easy to let slip in midlife, and I refuse to let it slip anymore. Coffee dates. Dinners out. Just sitting across from someone who knows me and actually seeing each other, not just texting back and forth for months without ever making real plans.
Friendship in midlife takes more effort than it used to, and I’ve stopped treating that as a bad thing. I treat it as worth the effort. These relationships are part of what keeps me grounded, especially now that I’m navigating an empty nest and a completely new career chapter at the same time.
Here’s the part that might surprise you. Even when I’m traveling, even when I’m supposed to be “off,” I still guard this time.
Every morning on vacation, I’m up early, walking. Watching the sunrise. Grabbing a coffee. If I’m near the water, I’m picking up shells along the way. It’s quiet. It’s mine. And honestly, it’s one of my favorite parts of any trip — not the big activity planned for later that day, but that first hour where it’s just me, my coffee, and the sunrise.
Vacation doesn’t cancel the habit. If anything, it makes it even more special, because I get to do it somewhere new.
I swear by guarding my calendar because I’ve lived both versions of this life, the version where I came last, and the version where I don’t.
When I came last, I was running on empty most of the time. I was showing up for everyone else and quietly falling apart in the background. I didn’t even realize how depleted I was until I started doing the opposite.
Now, when I protect this time, I show up better for absolutely everything else in my life. I’m a better coach to my clients. I’m more present with my son. I have more patience for the hard days with my dad’s care. I bring more energy to my career. None of that is a coincidence. It’s a direct result of filling my own cup first, instead of running on fumes and hoping nobody notices.
This isn’t selfish. I want to say that clearly, because so many midlife women have been trained to believe that taking time for themselves is selfish or indulgent. It’s not. It’s maintenance. You wouldn’t skip an oil change on your car for years and expect it to keep running fine. Your body, your mind, and your spirit deserve the same basic maintenance, on a schedule, not just whenever there happens to be time left over. Spoiler: there’s never time left over unless you claim it first.
You don’t need to overhaul your entire life to start this. Here’s where I’d begin if I were coaching you through it myself.
Pick one non-negotiable time block this week. Not five. One. Maybe it’s twenty minutes in the morning before anyone else is awake. Maybe it’s one Sunday afternoon. Start small enough that you’ll actually protect it.
Put it on the calendar like it’s an appointment you can’t miss. Because it is one. Treat it with the same seriousness you’d give a work meeting or a doctor’s visit.
Decide in advance what you’ll say if something tries to take that time. Something will try. A request, an errand, a “can you just.” Decide ahead of time that the answer is no, this time is already spoken for.
Notice how you feel after a few weeks of protecting it. This is the part that turns it from a discipline into a habit you actually want to keep. Once you feel the difference, you stop needing willpower to keep doing it.
Guarding your calendar isn’t about being rigid or unavailable to the people you love. It’s about making sure you’re actually on the list of people you show up for, instead of the one person who quietly gets left off it every single week.
This is only tip number one in this series, but I genuinely believe it’s the foundation everything else gets built on. You can’t build your best chapter yet on a calendar that has no room for you in it.
Stay tuned for Part 2, where we’ll dig into the next habit that’s shaped this season of my life.
Keep glowing. Keep growing. You’ve got this.
Why is guarding your calendar especially important in midlife? Midlife often comes with competing demands — caregiving for aging parents, career growth, shifting family dynamics, and changing health needs. Without intentionally protecting time for yourself, this season of life tends to fill every available hour with everyone else’s priorities.
What does a weekly self-care routine look like in practice? A weekly self-care routine can include daily morning movement like walking or strength training, a dedicated weekly reset day for tasks like meal prep and personal care, and consistent time spent with friends. The specific activities matter less than the consistency of protecting the time itself.
Is prioritizing personal time in midlife considered selfish? No. Prioritizing personal time is a form of maintenance, not selfishness. Consistently caring for your own physical and mental wellbeing allows you to show up with more patience, energy, and presence in your relationships, career, and caregiving responsibilities.
How do you maintain self-care habits while traveling? Many people find it helpful to keep at least one grounding habit consistent while traveling, such as a morning walk, even while the rest of the schedule changes. This maintains a sense of routine and personal time without requiring a strict daily structure.
Guarding your calendar is step one. If you want real support building the rest of your next chapter, that’s exactly what we work on together inside The Midlife GlowGetter 6-Week Strategy Session.
