I used to think that real change only happened in big dramatic moments. The total life overhaul. The brand new morning routine. The complete wellness transformation starting Monday. And because I was always waiting for that perfect big moment to arrive, I kept doing nothing. I kept staying stuck.
Maybe you know that feeling.
What actually worked for me, what is working RIGHT NOW, is the complete opposite of that. It is tiny habits. Little daily rituals. Small upgrades that seem almost too simple to matter. But together? They have genuinely changed how I feel in my body, in my head, and in my life.
I feel more organized. More energized. More calm. More connected to myself. And honestly, more glowy. Which is always the goal.
So today I want to share exactly what those five things are. No programs to buy. No big commitments required. Just five small things you could start today if you wanted to.
This one has had a bigger impact on my mental health than almost anything else I have ever tried. And it takes about ten minutes.
Every morning, or most mornings, because I am going to be real with you, not every single morning is perfect, I open my notebook and I do what I call a thought download. I write down everything that is in my head. Everything. Worries. Plans. Things I am grateful for. Things that are frustrating me. Ideas. Fears. Whatever is swirling around up there.
And I do not edit it. I do not try to make it pretty or positive or coherent. I just get it out of my head and onto the paper.
And here is why this works so well. A lot of anxiety lives in the gap between what you are feeling and what you have not said yet. When you get your thoughts out of your head, even just onto a private page that no one else will ever see — they lose some of their power. The weight of carrying them around gets lighter.
Your brain is not a storage unit. It is a processing machine. Help it process.
A lot of anxiety lives in the gap between what you are feeling and what you have not said yet. Get it out.
I use a plain notebook. Nothing fancy. Any notebook works. The point is not the notebook, it is the practice of getting out of your head and onto the page before the day has a chance to swallow you whole.
Try it for one week. Just one week. Ten minutes in the morning before you check your phone. I think it will surprise you.
Okay, this one is so simple it almost feels too small to mention. But it has quietly done something significant for me and I think it will for you too.
Every day I open my notes app and I write down three to five things I did well that day. Things I am proud of. Small wins I would normally just rush right past without noticing.
Things like: drank my water today. Took a walk even though I was tired. Said no to something that was not mine to carry. Made a healthy meal instead of ordering out. Sent that email I had been putting off. Showed up for myself in some small way.
These are not impressive things. They are not the kind of wins you post on social media. But they are real. And they matter.
Here is why I think this practice is so important for women over 40 specifically. We are really, really good at remembering everything we did wrong. Every mistake. Every missed workout. Every meal that was not perfect. Every moment we felt like we were failing.
But we are not nearly as good at remembering everything we did right. All the small, consistent, unglamorous things we do every day that are actually moving us forward.
The daily wins log is a way of training your brain to look for the evidence of your own progress. And here is the beautiful thing about the brain, it finds what it is looking for. Start training it to look for the wins and it will start finding them everywhere.
Three things. Every day. In your notes app. That is it.
This one might sound a little unusual as a wellness habit. But stay with me. Because I think it is more powerful than it appears.
I have a go-to outfit formula and it is mostly athleisure. Matching sets. Comfortable, clean, put-together. I wear it most of the time, not just when I am working out, but throughout my regular day.
And people sometimes ask me why. If I am not going to the gym, why dress like it?
Here is my honest answer: I am invoking a wellness lifestyle. I am dressing like the woman I am in the process of becoming. Someone who moves her body. Who values her health. Who is active and intentional about how she lives.
There is research behind this idea, it is sometimes called enclothed cognition, which is just a fancy way of saying that what you wear affects how you think and behave. When you dress like an athlete, you are more likely to move like one. When you dress like someone who takes care of herself, you are more likely to make choices that reflect that.
When you dress like your future self, something inside shifts. You start making different choices. You start carrying yourself differently.
And also, athleisure is incredibly comfortable. It is size-inclusive. It makes getting dressed in the morning simple and stress-free. And it looks great everywhere from the grocery store to a casual coffee date.
I am not going back. And once you try it, I do not think you will either.
Think about who you are becoming. And then dress like her.
Okay, this is the one I am most excited to share with you. Because it has done something really unexpected for me.
I started my own walking group here in Cleveland. We meet twice a month. We walk for about an hour. We talk. We laugh. We check on each other. We share what is going on in our lives.
Thirty-five women signed up.
Thirty-five women.
And that number genuinely blew me away. Because it told me something important. Women are hungry for this. Not just exercise. Not just steps. Real, in-person, face-to-face connection with other women who get it. Who are in the same season of life. Who are also trying to figure things out and take better care of themselves.
We live in a really disconnected world right now. Social media gives us the illusion of connection but it is not the same thing. And combining real community with movement? It has been one of the best things I have done for myself and for the women around me in a really long time.
Now here is what I want to say to you. You do not have to live in Cleveland. You do not need thirty-five people. You do not need a whole organized group with a name and a schedule.
You need one friend. One woman. And a walk.
Text someone today. Ask if she wants to walk with you once a week or twice a month. Start there. That is a walking group. And those one-hour conversations while you move your bodies together? They will do more for your mental health, your motivation, and your overall wellbeing than you can probably imagine right now.
Start with one. See what grows.
And the last one is probably the smallest habit on this list. But it might be doing the most work quietly in the background.
I call it the Craving Curve. And the whole practice is this: when I feel a craving coming on — for food I do not really need, for a purchase I cannot really justify, for anything that has that urgent emotional feeling to it, I wait ten minutes.
I set a timer. And while I wait, I journal. I ask myself some honest questions.
What am I actually feeling right now? What is going on underneath this craving? Am I physically hungry or am I stressed? Am I bored? Am I lonely? Am I tired? Am I trying to escape something uncomfortable?
And nine times out of ten, nine times out of ten, within ten minutes the craving shifts. It does not disappear forever. But it loses its urgency. The emotional charge behind it softens. And I can make a clearer, calmer, more intentional choice about what I actually want to do.
This one practice has helped me with both emotional eating and emotional spending. And if you have been working on your relationship with either of those things, which honestly most of us in midlife are, this is a powerful tool.
The craving is never really about the food or the purchase. It is about the feeling underneath it. Get curious about the feeling.
Ten minutes. That is all it asks of you. Ten minutes and a willingness to be a little bit honest with yourself.
Try it once this week. Just once. And notice what you find when you stop and actually look.
Here is what I want you to take away from all five of these habits:
None of them are dramatic. None of them require a big investment of money or time. None of them will impress anyone on social media. None of them are going to transform your life in a single day.
But together, done consistently, done imperfectly, done on the ordinary Tuesday mornings and the tired Friday evenings, they are quietly changing everything. How I feel in my body. How I think about myself. How I show up for my own life.
That is the real glow-up. Not the dramatic transformation. The slow, steady, consistent choice to take just a little bit better care of yourself every single day.
Pick one of these five things. Try it this week. Just one.
And then come back and tell me how it felt. I want to hear everything.
🌸 Which one of these habits are you going to try first? Drop it in the comments! And if this post resonated with you, share it with a woman in your life who is trying to take better care of herself in midlife. We all need that reminder that small steps count. You are doing better than you think. Keep going.

Your subconscious mind is always listening. Every thought you repeat becomes a belief. Every belief becomes your reality. If you keep focusing on what`s missing, the bank account, the age, the excuses, that`s exactly what you`ll keep creating more of.
These were my early morning thoughts this morning on my sunrise walk in the Metroparks here near Cleveland Ohio.
I hope you have an amazing day today.
