How do you find purpose in midlife? Start by getting to know who you are now, not who you were at 25. Notice what lights you up and what drains you, get clear on your values, look at your own story for clues, and then take small steps and follow the energy. Purpose isn’t something you find in one big moment. You build it, one honest step at a time.
If you’ve ever typed “I don’t know what to do with my life” into Google at 11 pm, you’re not alone. I’ve been there.
I’m Jax, a certified life coach for women over 40. A few years ago, I was over 400 pounds, deep in debt, and running on autopilot. I started with one walk around the block. As of October 2026, I’m down over 200 pounds, I’ve paid off $45,000 in debt, and I help women over 40 reinvent their lives. That became my purpose. Let’s find yours.
It means waking up with direction and joy, instead of just getting through the day.
For years, maybe decades, you’ve been the glue. The caregiver. The hard worker. The mom, the daughter, the one who does it all. Somewhere along the way, you may have lost a little of yourself.
Finding your purpose isn’t about adding more to your plate. It’s about reconnecting with who you are and deciding how you want to spend the years ahead.
And here’s the truth. Your purpose can change. It can have layers. It’s allowed to look different at 47 than it did at 27. At its heart, it’s where what you love, what you’re good at, and what helps others all meet.
If you’re reading this, you probably already feel the nudge. A few common signs:
These feelings aren’t random. They’re invitations.
You don’t have to figure it all out at once. Just take the next right step.
1. Get to know who you are today.
You’re not the same woman you were at 25, and that’s a good thing. Ask yourself: What do I value most right now? What brings me deep joy? What drains me? What have I outgrown?
Try this: Write “I feel most alive when…” at the top of a page and keep writing for 5 to 10 minutes.
2. Reignite old passions.
The book you keep thinking about writing. The art supplies in the closet. The trip you keep putting off. Make a list of everything you used to love doing, and try one thing just for fun. It doesn’t have to be productive. It just has to light you up.
3. Get clear on your values.
What mattered at 25 may not matter now. Maybe you used to chase career success, and now you crave health and freedom. Write down your top 5 values today, like health, connection, adventure, growth, or peace. Then ask: Am I living by these?
4. Look at your own story.
Your purpose is often hidden in what you’ve been through. What have you overcome? What do friends come to you for? The things you’ve healed from are often the things you’re meant to help others with.
5. Drop the “shoulds.”
After 40, it’s time to stop people-pleasing. Ask yourself: If I didn’t care what anyone thought, what would I do? What would I try if I knew I couldn’t fail?
6. Match it to your season of life.
Be honest about your time, energy, and responsibilities. Your purpose doesn’t have to be a big job or a business. It could be mentoring, a passion project, or leading a group of women like you.
7. Start small and follow the energy.
Purpose usually shows up through doing, not overthinking. Take a class. Volunteer. Say yes to things that feel like you. Notice what energizes you and what drains you, and do more of the first.
Here are a few real-life ideas to get you thinking:
Your purpose can be bold or quiet, public or private. It just has to feel true to you.
If your purpose points toward a new job, read my story of changing careers at 49.
Breathe. There’s no deadline. You’re not behind.
You don’t find your purpose by thinking harder. You find it by paying attention to what makes time disappear, what you’d stop putting up with if fear weren’t in the way, and who you were before everyone needed something from you.

Pick one prompt a day this week:
Want more ways to plan your next chapter? Read why every midlife woman needs a 5 to 10 year life plan and 5 ways to start reinventing your life after 40.
Get to know who you are now, clarify your values, revisit old passions, and look at your own story for clues. Then take small steps, like a class or a volunteer role, and notice what gives you energy. Purpose grows through action.
Yes. Many women feel lost in midlife as kids grow up, careers shift, and old roles fall away. It’s often a sign you’re ready for a new chapter, not that something is wrong with you.
Start small. Notice what makes time fly, what drains you, and what keeps tugging at you. Try one new thing this month. You don’t need a five-year plan today, just one honest next step.
Yes. Your purpose can change with each season of life. What felt meaningful at 25 may not fit at 45, and that’s normal. It’s allowed to grow as you grow.

You’re not behind.
You’re just getting started.
