Quick answer: What does showing up for yourself mean? It means you treat yourself like someone who matters today, not someday. You get dressed with care, you keep small promises to yourself, and you stop waiting for the “right” size, job, or free time to feel good. The easiest place to start is your clothes. Wear what your future self would wear, in the size you are right now.
I’ll be honest with you. For years, I waited.
I waited to buy nice clothes.
I waited to feel confident.
I waited to like the woman in the mirror.
I’m Jax, a certified life coach for women over 40. My highest weight was 431 pounds, and as of October 2026, I’m down over 200 pounds. But the biggest change didn’t come from the scale. It came when I stopped waiting and started showing up for myself every single day.
Because you’ve spent years showing up for everyone else. Your kids, your job, your partner, your parents. You put yourself last for so long that it starts to feel normal.
And many of us tell ourselves a story: “I’ll take care of me when I lose the weight.” Or “when the kids are grown.” Or “when things calm down.”
Here’s the truth. There’s no perfect moment. The time to show up for yourself is now.
It can. In a 2012 study, researchers Hajo Adam and Adam Galinsky found that people who wore a white lab coat they were told was a doctor’s coat did better on attention tests than people in their own clothes. They called it “enclothed cognition.” In plain words: what you wear can change how you think. You can read about it in this summary from the British Psychological Society.
I’m not saying a cute top will fix your life. But clothes that make you feel put together send a message to your brain: I matter today.
Every day, you show the world who you are. At the store, at work, on a coffee date. That message counts, and it’s for you first.
Start with fit, comfort, and one thing that makes you smile. Here are the 5 ways that helped me most.
You don’t have to wait until you lose weight to dress the way you want. Start now. If you want to feel confident, wear clothes that make you feel strong. Dress like the woman you’re becoming.
When I started trying plus-size fashion made for women over 40, it changed everything for me. Clothes that fit the body I had that day opened up my love for style again.
Try this: Make a Pinterest board called “Future Me” style. Then add one small piece of that look to your outfit this week.
Forget the number on the tag. A piece that fits your shape will always look better than something too tight or too big. A tailor can be your secret weapon.
Try this: Pick one item in your closet that almost fits. Take it to a tailor and see what a small change can do.
Style and comfort can go together. Look for flowy tops, stretchy but structured pants, and soft, quality knits. If you can move and breathe, you’ll wear it more.
Try this: Do a quick closet check. Is there anything you skip because it’s itchy, tight, or annoying? Let it go, and make room for pieces you love.
Accessories can turn a plain outfit into a look. A pair of earrings, a good bag, nice shoes, or a bold lip can make you feel finished.
Try this: Pick your one “I feel put together” item. Red lipstick, a watch, a statement necklace. Wear it this week, even on an ordinary day.
Confidence shows in how you carry yourself. Head up. Shoulders back. Feet planted.
Your posture can even change your mood. In a New Zealand study of 74 adults, reported by TIME, people who sat up straight felt more upbeat, had higher self-esteem, and felt less fear than people who slumped.
Try this: Before you leave the house, stand tall in front of the mirror for 30 seconds. Take three slow breaths. Then go.
Show up anyway. Confidence doesn’t come first. It comes from keeping small promises to yourself, over and over.
Get dressed even when you’re working from home. Do your hair even when no one will see it. Wear the earrings. Each small choice is proof that you’re worth the effort.

It means treating yourself like you matter today. You keep small promises to yourself, take care of your body and mind, and stop waiting for a perfect moment to feel good about your life.
Pick one small daily action, like getting dressed with care, a short walk, or 5 minutes of quiet time. Do it every day, even when you don’t feel like it. Small promises kept build real confidence.
No. Buy a few pieces that fit and flatter the body you have now. Feeling good in your clothes today can give you more energy and confidence for your goals.
Focus on fit over the size on the tag, choose comfy fabrics that move with you, and add one accessory you love. A tailor can make clothes you already own fit much better.
Stop waiting for perfect.
Get dressed for the woman you’re becoming.
Take up space.
Your future self is already inside you, my beautiful friend. Let her out a little more today.
