Quick Answer: After a 9-day road trip from Cleveland to Folly Beach and Charleston, South Carolina with my adult son, I came home with a real list of travel lessons — from packing lighter and using a crossbody bag, to involving my son in the planning and choosing a condo over a hotel for part of the trip. These are the practical tips that made the biggest difference for a newbie midlife traveler like me.
Hey Friends,
I just got back from my first big trip of this new travel chapter, 9 days in Folly Beach and Charleston, South Carolina with my son Jake, and I came home with a real list of lessons learned.
I’m still new to traveling this often, so I want to share what actually worked, what I’d do differently, and what I’d tell any midlife woman planning her own first big trip. If you missed it, I also wrote up our full itinerary in a separate post, but this one is all about the practical stuff.
Charleston is a popular destination, especially in the summer, so certain spots are going to be crowded no matter what day you go. My approach was to hit the big, well-known attractions early in the day whenever possible. That’s part of why so many of our mornings started with a sunrise beach walk followed by an early activity. Fewer crowds, cooler temperatures, and a much more peaceful experience overall. If a destination is known for long lines or packed sidewalks, building your schedule around the early morning hours is one of the simplest ways to avoid most of it.
Traveling with a 27-year-old is a completely different experience than traveling with a young child, and it deserves its own conversation. There’s no stroller, no nap schedule, no snack meltdowns to plan around. Instead, it felt like traveling with a good friend who happens to share your DNA and thirty years of inside jokes.
We split up the planning between us, compromised on what each of us wanted to do, and enjoyed each other’s company without the stress that can come with traveling with little ones. If you’re a mom of grown kids thinking about taking a trip like this, I really encourage it. It’s a different kind of bonding than you got when they were young, and it might end up being just as meaningful, if not more.
I had this entire trip planned out almost hour by hour, and even still, a few things shifted along the way. That turned out to be completely fine. Trips rarely go exactly as planned, weather changes, places are more crowded than expected, or you’re just not in the mood for what you had scheduled. Having a plan is great. Holding it loosely is even better. Going in with that mindset kept the whole trip feeling like an adventure instead of a checklist to complete.
It’s tempting to fill every single hour of a trip with activities, especially when you’re excited about a destination. We built plenty of beach afternoons and quiet stretches into our schedule on purpose, and those ended up being some of my favorite parts of the entire week. Rest is part of the vacation, not something that gets in the way of it. Coming home more exhausted than when you left defeats the purpose of taking the trip in the first place.
This goes hand in hand with flexibility, but it’s worth calling out on its own. A couple of times, plans didn’t go exactly as scheduled, a longer wait than expected, a shift in what we were in the mood for, and pivoting instead of forcing the original plan kept things feeling easy rather than stressful. Being open to a plan B, or even a plan C, is one of the most underrated travel skills there is.
Our drive to and from Charleston was long, both ways. Instead of dreading that stretch of road, I chose to see it as a gift. Jake and I had hours of uninterrupted time together, no phones buzzing with work notifications, no distractions pulling us in different directions. Some of my best conversations with him over the years have happened in a car, and this trip was no exception. If you’re facing a long drive on your next trip, consider treating that time as part of the experience instead of something to just get through.
I say this to myself before every single trip, and I still managed to overpack a little this time. We always think we need more outfits, more shoes, more just-in-case items than we actually end up using. Packing versatile pieces that mix and match, comfortable shoes for a lot of walking, and just one or two swimsuits goes a long way. Less stuff means less stress and more room in the car or suitcase.
This one made a real difference for us. Instead of building the entire itinerary myself and just handing it to Jake, I texted him ideas along the way, restaurants, activities, even short video clips of places that looked interesting, and asked what sounded good to him. It made the trip feel like something we built together, rather than something I planned and he simply showed up for.
This is why we chose a beach condo for the Folly Beach portion of our trip instead of a hotel. Having a kitchen meant we could make some of our own meals instead of eating out for every single one, which saved real money over several days. It also gave us more space to spread out and relax, especially staying somewhere for an extended stretch of time. For a shorter downtown stay, a hotel made more sense, but for the longer beach portion, the extra space and kitchen access were worth it.
I know this sounds a little old-fashioned in a world where everyone relies on their phone for directions, but phones die, service drops out in certain areas, and technology fails sometimes. Having an actual paper map as a backup meant we were never truly stuck, no matter what happened with our phones along the way.
We planned multiple nighttime beach walks throughout the trip, and having a good flashlight made a real difference, both for visibility and for basic safety on a beach we weren’t fully familiar with yet. If evening walks are part of your plan, this is a small item that’s easy to forget and genuinely useful to have.
When you’re out all day walking, shopping, and sightseeing, having your hands free and your belongings secure makes a noticeable difference. A crossbody bag kept my essentials close and my hands free, and it’s a lot harder for anyone to grab compared to a purse hanging loosely off one shoulder.
This was a small change that ended up mattering a lot. Instead of carrying a separate wallet, I used a slim magnetic wallet attached to the back of my phone, just an ID and a card or two. One less thing to keep track of, one less thing to dig through a bag looking for.
With a drive as long as ours, stopping for every single meal or snack adds up fast, both in time and in money. Keeping a cooler with drinks and snacks in the car meant we could keep moving, save some money, and avoid getting hangry somewhere in the middle of a long highway stretch.
A long car ride is so much better with good content already lined up before you leave. We had a mix of podcasts, an audiobook, and a few playlists ready to go, which turned all that drive time into part of the fun instead of something to simply get through.
This trip taught me that you don’t need years of travel experience to plan something meaningful. A little bit of preparation, a willingness to stay flexible, and the right small tools, a good bag, a backup map, snacks for the road — can make a huge difference in how a trip actually feels.
If you’re a midlife woman just starting to travel more, I hope this list gives you a real, practical head start. You don’t need it all figured out. You just need one trip on the calendar.
Keep glowing. Keep growing. You’ve got this.
What should you pack for a beach and city road trip? For a trip combining beach days and city walking, versatile clothing that works for both settings, comfortable walking shoes, a swimsuit, and layers for changing weather tend to be more useful than packing separate outfits for every possible scenario.
Is it better to stay in a hotel or a vacation rental while traveling? Vacation rentals with kitchens can be more cost-effective and comfortable for longer stays, especially at beach destinations, while hotels can be more convenient for shorter downtown stays with easier access to restaurants and attractions.
How can you avoid crowds at popular tourist destinations? Visiting popular attractions early in the morning, before peak visiting hours, is one of the most effective ways to avoid large crowds and enjoy a more relaxed experience at well-known destinations.
What are good ways to bond with an adult child while traveling? Long car rides, shared meal planning, and collaborative trip planning — such as texting ideas back and forth before the trip — can create meaningful connection time between a parent and an adult child during a shared trip.

✨ Separate age from identity. "I`m 48" is a fact; "I`m past my prime" is a belief. Treat them differently.
My mind was the first thing I had to rebuild. Before the debt payoff, before the 190+ lbs, before the new license and the new job, I had to change the story I was telling myself about who I still got to become. Save this for the days your mindset needs a rebuild too.

Your deepest desire deserves your attention.
Sometimes we’re so busy meeting everyone else’s expectations that we forget to ask ourselves one simple question:
What do I really want?
For me, it’s becoming the most educated, curious, and growth-oriented version of myself. Every book, podcast, course, and conversation is another step toward that goal.
Your deepest desire doesn’t have to look like anyone else’s. It just has to be true to you.
