Last week, we opened this series with Pillar 1: Awakening.
We talked about that quiet but powerful moment in midlife when a woman begins to realize something in her life no longer fits. She starts to feel restless. She starts to want more truth, more peace, more purpose, and more alignment. She starts waking up to the fact that she does not want to keep living on autopilot.
And once that awakening begins, one of the next questions that often rises is this:
Not just:
Who have I been for everyone else?
Not just:
What roles have I played?
Not just:
What responsibilities have I carried?
But:
Who am I really?
Who did I learn to be?
What parts of me are true, and what parts were shaped by survival, pain, expectation, or proving?
And who am I becoming now in this next chapter of life?
That is what we are talking about this week.
And this one is deep.
Because many women in midlife are not just trying to improve their lives. They are trying to understand themselves.
They are trying to separate:
That matters more than most women realize.
Identity is the story a woman lives from.
It is the deeper belief she carries about:
Identity shapes so much more than people realize.
It affects:
That is why this pillar matters so much.
Because many women are trying to build a new life while still carrying an old story about themselves.
They may want more peace, more health, more purpose, more confidence, more visibility, or more success. But if they still secretly believe they are:
then that old identity story quietly shapes everything.
This is one of the most powerful truths in midlife identity work.
A lot of women did not consciously choose the identities they carry.
They learned them.
They absorbed them from:
So a woman may begin believing things like:
And after years of repetition, those beliefs stop feeling like stories.
They start feeling like facts.
But just because a thought has been repeated for years does not mean it is your deepest truth.
Sometimes it is simply your oldest script.
This is especially common for women over 40.
A woman may know exactly what she does, but not deeply know who she is.
She may say:
Those roles matter.
But they are not the whole self.
And midlife often exposes that.
Because when a woman has spent years building identity around being needed, useful, and strong for everyone else, she can start to feel deeply disconnected from herself underneath the role.
She may suddenly realize:
That can feel scary.
But it can also be the beginning of freedom.
Because once a woman sees that role and self are not the same thing, she can begin reclaiming more of who she really is.
This is one of the most important things women can understand about identity.
Sometimes what a woman calls her personality is actually a survival pattern.
She may say:
And maybe some of that is personality.
But maybe some of it is also adaptation.
Maybe she became hyper-independent because depending on others felt unsafe.
Maybe she became a people pleaser because keeping the peace protected her.
Maybe she became quiet because speaking up once led to criticism, rejection, or shame.
Maybe she became overly responsible because someone had to hold everything together.
Maybe she became emotionally guarded because being open felt painful.
That changes the whole conversation.
Because now the question is not:
What is wrong with me?
That is a much kinder and more honest place to begin.
This is a big one.
So many women were raised to be “good.”
The good girl is:
And for years, that identity gets rewarded.
But over time, it often costs women:
A woman may look good on the outside and still feel:
This is why identity work matters.
Because many women were taught how to be acceptable before they were ever taught how to be true.
And midlife often becomes the season where that starts to crack.
A lot of women are still living under labels that were formed years ago.
Labels like:
Even if life has changed, the label can stay.
A woman may lose weight and still feel like the unattractive girl.
She may become more successful and still feel like the woman who never gets it right.
She may become wise, grounded, and capable, and still see herself through the eyes of an old wound.
That is why identity is such important work.
Because a woman cannot fully build a new chapter if she is still secretly seeing herself through an old label.
Here is the beautiful part.
Healthy identity work usually does not feel fake.
It often feels like remembering.
It can feel like:
That is why this work is so powerful.
Because women are often afraid that changing means becoming fake or trying to be somebody else.
But real identity work is usually not about becoming more fake.
It is about becoming more honest.
It is about uncovering the woman who has been buried under the roles, the expectations, the labels, and the survival strategies.
If a woman does not understand the identity story she has been living from, she may keep repeating the same patterns even when she truly wants change.
She may:
That is exhausting.
Identity work helps her ask:
Those questions are powerful because they open the door to real change.
If this post is stirring something in you, sit with these questions this week:
You do not need to solve all of this at once.
This week is about noticing.
Noticing the old stories.
Noticing the old labels.
Noticing the parts of you that may be true, and the parts that may simply be familiar.
That is enough.
This blog post is part of The Midlife GlowGetter 8-Week Awakening Series, and each week has a coordinating podcast episode.
For Week 2, listen to:
In that episode, I go deeper into:
The podcast and blog are designed to work together, so be sure to listen too.
If this post stirred something in you, and you know you want more than inspiration — you want support, structure, reflection, and community as you walk through these 8 pillars — I want to invite you to apply for something special.
I am opening a free beta group for 10 women over 40 who want to go deeper into this work in a guided group coaching experience.

Tell me you are interested, and I will make sure you are added to the list as I prepare to open this first round.
If this post spoke to you, I hope you hold onto this truth:
You are more than the roles you perform.
You are more than the labels you have carried.
You are more than what happened to you.
And you are allowed to become someone truer.
That is what this pillar is about.
Next week, we will move into Pillar 3: Healing — because once a woman starts awakening and looking honestly at identity, the next question often becomes:
Until then, be gentle with yourself.
Sometimes the most powerful thing a woman can realize is this:
And that realization can change everything.

A lot of women think emotional eating is about willpower. For me, it was about pain, stress, and survival.
Food was not the real issue. It was the outlet.
When I started looking at the emotions under the habit, I finally began to heal.
Comment “root cause” if you know your eating is about more than food.

For a long time, my emotional eating happened in private. Late nights. Heavy stress. Heavy shame. Heavy emotions.
This was one of the hardest parts of my story to admit, but it was also the start of my healing.
I was not weak. I was overwhelmed. And once I understood that, everything began to change.
Have you ever used food to cope with stress at night? Tell me “me too” in the comments.

This one hit me deep because it is true.
Sometimes the people we love most are sitting right in front of us… and still feeling far away.
Today’s challenge:
Give someone you love 10 full minutes of your undivided attention.
No phone.
No multitasking.
No rushing.
Just presence.
Look them in the eyes and ask, “How are you really?”
Then listen with your whole heart.
That is how connection grows.
That is how love feels safe.
That is how relationships get stronger.
Save this for later.
Share it with someone you love.
