Today’s question: “I’m 45 and I feel like my life is over. Everyone else seems so far ahead of me. Is it too late to start again?”
Here’s the short answer. Your life is not over at 45. It feels that way because midlife is often the heaviest stretch: big responsibilities, a changing body, and a lot of looking back at what didn’t happen. Research even shows that happiness tends to dip in the late 40s and then climb back up. The feeling is real. It’s just not the end of your story.
I know this feeling. In 2022, I was laid off, deep in debt, and over 400 pounds. I felt invisible. Today, I’m a certified life and wellness coach. As of September 2026, I’m down 200 pounds. I paid off $45,000 in debt. And at 49, I started a brand new career.
So let’s keep it real about why this season feels so heavy, and what you can do about it starting this week.
Because a lot hits at once in your mid 40s, and most of it happens quietly in the background. Here are the big ones:
None of this means you failed. It means you’re in a season that asks a lot of you.
Yes. It’s so common that researchers have a name for the pattern: the happiness U-curve.
Economist David Blanchflower looked at well-being data from 132 countries. In his 2020 study, well-being bottomed out around age 47 in developed countries, then rose again. In other words, the dip is normal, and it doesn’t last forever.
Here’s the truth: feeling lost isn’t proof that your best years are behind you. Very often, it’s the start of the next chapter.
No. You’ll be 50 in five years either way. The question is whether you’ll be 50 with a new habit, a new skill, or a new career, or 50 and still waiting for the “right time.”
I was 49 when I started my new career. I didn’t feel ready. I started anyway. If work is what feels stuck for you, read is it too late to change careers at 45 or 50.
Start smaller than you think. Big change in midlife comes from small steps you repeat, not one giant leap.
Try this: Set a timer for 5 minutes. Finish this sentence as many ways as you can: “If my life isn’t over, then the next 5 years could include…” Circle the one that excites you most.

If the heavy feeling won’t lift, it’s time to get support. Mayo Clinic lists signs of depression like feelings of emptiness or hopelessness and loss of interest in things you used to enjoy. If that sounds like you, make an appointment with your doctor or a mental health professional as soon as you can.
If you ever have thoughts of hurting yourself, please call or text the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline at 988 in the US, as the National Institute of Mental Health recommends. You deserve real support, my beautiful friend.
Yes, it’s very common. Midlife often stacks big responsibilities, body changes, and a lot of looking back all at once. Research that looked at 132 countries found that well-being tends to bottom out in the late 40s and then rise again.
No. You’ll be 50 in five years either way. The real question is what you want to be doing at 50. Many women start new careers, habits, and businesses in their 40s and 50s. I started a brand new career at 49.
One large study by economist David Blanchflower found that, in developed countries, well-being hits its lowest point around age 47. The good news is that the same research shows it tends to climb back up after that.
Stop measuring your life against other people’s timelines. Pick one area to work on, like your health, money, or career, and take one small step this week. Progress you can see is the fastest cure for feeling behind.
If you feel hopeless, empty, or uninterested in things you used to enjoy, talk to your doctor or a mental health professional as soon as you can. If you ever have thoughts of hurting yourself, call or text 988 in the US.
Your life isn’t over.
It’s asking for a new chapter.
And you get to write it.
